In math, the second graders have been learning about money and telling time. They have learned to tell time in 5-minute increments, to understand A.M and P.M and elapsed time.Second grade has also begun the last unit in ARC, called Jobs in My Community. The students will research jobs in the community, such as teachers, policemen, firemen, and veterinarians. They will be immersed in books that relate to those jobs.The students are excited for the field trip to The Vanderbilt Museum.This trip relates to the science unit  Habitats which ties into their current learning about different habitats (locations, weather, plants and animals).

In reading and writing, the second grade continues to read and write animal stories. They are focusing on characters, setting, problems and solutions. Students are looking forward to creating their very own collection of animal stories. In Science, the students are learning about Earth’s processes and how it changes. In Math, the class wrapped up the unit on measurement and will begin Chapter 13 (Represent and Interpret Data).For Earth Day, students will be completing a family project.They will make a recycled bug or flower and then write about how they can help the Earth. They will share their completed project on Earth Day.

February is Black History Month. In class, students researched famous African Americans. Students will also read all about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln for Presidents’ Day. The students were excited to work on Valentine-themed crafts and deliver Valentines to their friends on Valentine’s Day! P.S. I Love You day is on Valentine’s Day this year. Students created purple hearts with messages on how they can spread love and kindness. In Math, students are adding numbers within 1,000. In Social Studies, students learned about our government. In ELA, our Entomologists published their books about their chosen bug. We look forward to celebrating our authors as they share their books.We will begin Unit 3 in ARC- Literature Genre Lab- Animal Stories. Students will investigate animal stories. They will become experts in the genre, examining the characters, the plots, and the lessons learned. They will read realistic fiction, fantasy and traditional tales. Students will write their own animal stories through daily guided writing practice.

Second grade is immersed in an ELA bug unit. We will soon have entomologists among us! In math, the second graders continue to practice subtraction within 100. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home. In Social studies, classes are learning about different types of communities.

As part of the American Reading Company program, second graders wrapped up their Unit 1 Literacy Launch and launched a new unit called “Bugs in Their Ecosystems.” The students wrote poetry and personal narratives and will now focus on research writing. The students are taking part in an in-house field trip, provided by BOCES, where they have hands-on experience with insects in their individual ecosystems (water and land). In math, second grade is finishing up double digit addition and will move on to subtraction strategies. A science unit began with understanding the different states of matter and students will continue to understand and classify properties. Chromebooks went home, and the district urges families to remind students that they are used for educational purposes and how to care for them.
