In math, sixth graders are starting a unit on statistics where they are learning to find the different measures of center: mean, median, mode, range, etc. In Science, the students are wrapping up a unit on the periodic table of elements. The children will be creating their own element superhero or villain based on the properties of the element they choose toresearch. InELA, the students are learning how to gather information from a variety of sources to create an argument for a debate.

In Science, the sixth graders are still learning about the periodic table of elements. As soon as the unit wraps up, they will be researching an element and working on creating their very own element superheroes/villains.

The sixth grade visited Westhampton Beach Middle School for seventh grade orientation and returned to East Quogue excited to be seventh graders.In math, the students are finishing up an algebra unit and will be starting a unit using Integers where they will represent quantities in real-world contexts using positive and negative numbers. In science, they just finished a unit on electricity and magnetism. The students will now begin learning about elements and the periodic table, Mrs. Alessi’s favorite.There are a lot of fun projects during this unit that the students enjoy. Anita from the Group for the East End visited for an in-house lesson on the moon and the tides.Our lesson ended with a fun “moon munch” activity. In ELA the students just finished writing a five-paragraph, informative essay on change. The students had to reflect on changes within themselves, changes in a character in the book “Walk Two Moons,” and changes in our society.

In math, the sixth grade students are learning how percents are used in the world and how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents. In science, they are learning about the different types of energy and applying this knowledge to their very own Rube Goldberg machines.The sixth grade students have also been busy planning holiday activities and are excited to share their ideas with the other students for Holiday Helpers on Thursday, December 19th.

The sixth graders are learning about rates, ratios and proportions in math.They now know how to compare prices. Take them shopping with you, and they’ll know how to find the best deals! In science, the students are finishing their second unit on solids, liquids and gases. They also had a guest educator from Cornell Cooperative who talked about the Back to the Bays Program.The guest educator shared a lot of the programs that are available and shared the information with families via Parent Square. In ELA, the sixth graders just finished writing personal narratives. To celebrate all their hard work, they had a Popcorn Publishing Party! The students shared their writing, wrote compliments for each other and ate Popcorners.
