In math, fifth graders are learning about coordinate planes. They are focusing on plotting points, finding the distance between points and reading and graphing data. In ELA, the students are learning all about planets and space tools. They will use this information to create a “letter to NASA” by making a claim for which space tool we believe should receive government funding for future research, on a specific planet. They will also use the evidence they have found to support their claims. In science, students are preparing for the state test. In social studies, the students are beginning a unit on the Civil War. We would like to thank the PTA for all the generous surprises during Teacher Appreciation Week!

In reading and writing, fifth grade is preparing for the ELA state test. The students are focusing on reading passages on their own, while learning test-taking strategies to help them focus and do their overall best.In science, they are learning about the human impact on Earth's systemsand what they can do in their everyday lives to help their environment.In math, the students are learning to find the volume of a composite figure.

The fifth graders are wrapping up their math unit on multiplying fractions and mixed numbers and will move on to dividing fractions. In social studies, they will study the first president of the United States, the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, and the Trail of Tears. In ELA, the students are finishing and publishing adventure stories. Check out their stories by scanning the QR codes in the fifth-grade hallway! The students are also reading a new class novel,“Schooled” by Gordon Korman. They are also very excited about the National Circus project coming to EQ. Thank you to the PTA for providing this special opportunity for our students.

This month, the fifth graders have been working hard on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We will be moving on to multiplication of fractions this week! In Science, we recently completed our study of Earth’s water and are excited to be diving into the creation of our Constitution during Social Studies.The fifth grade is wrapping up our novel study of Shipwreck Island and will begin drafting our very own survival/adventure stories that we have been planning out over the past few weeks. Stay tuned for our published pieces in March!

Fifth grade is wrapping up a unit on ecosystems and creating Google slideshows to present their research findings. In Social studies, the students have completed their study of the American Revolution and are creating reenactments of important battles and events during this time period. During math, they are fully immersed in long division and are excited to solve real world problems using their new skills.The fifth grade is also looking forward to celebrating the holidays with the Ugly T-shirt Contest this month. The students are designing, creating, and writing persuasive essays to convince the judges that their shirt deserves to win.
