Kindergarten has been full of fun and learning lately. The students have been working with word families to help them sound out and read new words. In reading and writing, they are exploring the fascinating world of insects, focusing on their unique features. In math, students are learning to identify different 2D and 3D shapes. As Memorial Day approaches, they are learning about its significance and honoring those who have sacrificed for our country. Kindergarteners are also learning about various community helpers and thinking about what we might be when they grow up.Lastly, everyone is getting very excited for the upcoming field trips to the East Quogue firehouse and the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center!

Kindergarten began exploring ecosystems, such as oceans and deserts, and the unique plants and animals that live in each. The students have also been expanding their sight word knowledge to help with both reading and writing.In math, the students are working on understanding teen numbers and practicing counting to 100.With Earth Day coming up, the students are brainstorming ways they can help the Earth and take care of the environment. They are also looking for signs of spring as they learn about the parts of a plant and how to take care of them. It’s a busy and exciting month full of learning and discovery!

Kindergarteners are excited to be learning about ecosystems in ELA, particularly about the Savanna. They have been exploring its features, plants, animals, and food webs. In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, the students enjoyed reading the author’s books, which have helped them practice rhyming skills. In math, the students are focused on teen numbers and are practicing counting and adding by grouping numbers into tens. Throughout March, the class is discussing weather changes, comparing conditions to a lion or a lamb. Additionally, the students participated in a wonderful workshop with the Southampton Animal Shelter, where they learned to make toys for shelter animals alongside a furry rabbit friend. Many families generously donated supplies for the shelter animals as well!

So far in February, kindergarteners have been hard at work reading and writing about the characteristics of fish. For President’s Day, we are learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and the traits that made them great leaders. We are excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day and P.S. I Love You Day as we continue to discuss the importance of kindness, love and respect all year.In math, we have been subtracting numbers up to 10 and have also been practicing counting to 100 as we prepare for the 100th day of school!Lastly, we are celebrating Black History month and reading about powerful leaders in history, such as Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges.

December is a busy month in kindergarten. We are wrapping up our ELA unit on mammals and will soon begin learning about birds and their features. Our students are also practicing new power words to help build their reading skills. In math, kindergarteners are working on composing and decomposing numbers using number bonds.As they move further into the holiday spirit, the students are exploring various winter holidays and traditions, while also discussing the importance of kindness during this time of year.
